Mandatory Travel Insurance for Mainland Tanzania
Effective 1 October 2026 , eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania will be required to have valid Inbound Travel Insurance under the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026 – Government Notice No. 256.
The requirement applies to visitors entering Mainland Tanzania through airports, seaports and land borders. The designated provider for Mainland Tanzania is the National Insurance Corporation of Tanzania Limited (NIC).

Designated Provider: The National Insurance Corporation of Tanzania Limited (NIC) is the designated provider of Inbound Travel Insurance for foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania.
How to Purchase: Visitors can purchase the insurance online before travelling through the official portal https://inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz/apply. The application requires passport and basic travel information, including travel dates, nationality, purpose of travel and first entry point. NIC also provides for purchase upon arrival at designated NIC counters at entry points.
Cost and Validity: The standard adult premium is USD 44 equivalent in Tanzanian Shillings. The policy is valid for up to 92 days and allows multiple entries.
Coverage Details: The insurance covers emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation and loss of luggage.
Payment: Online payment is available by Visa or Mastercard, while payment can also be made upon arrival at designated NIC counters.
Insurance Plan Options
NIC offers three plan options based on the number of people travelling:
Individual Plan – 1 to 2 people:
Suitable for individual travellers or parties of up to two people. Adults aged 18 and above pay the full premium, children aged 3–17 receive a 50% discount, and infants aged 0–2 are covered free of charge.
Family Plan – 3 to 9 people:
Designed for groups of 3–9 travellers. Adults aged 18 and above pay the full premium, children aged 3–17 receive a 50% discount, and infants aged 0–2 are covered free of charge.
Group Plan – 10 or more people:
For groups of 10 or more travellers. Adults aged 18 and above receive a 10% discount, children aged 3–17 receive a 50% discount, and infants aged 0–2 are covered free of charge.
What Is Not Covered?
The NIC policy documentation lists exclusions including:
- Pre-existing medical conditions
- War and armed conflict
- Terrorism and certain civil disturbances
- Certain natural catastrophes, epidemics and pandemics unless specifically covered
- Criminal acts, fraud or reckless conduct
- Alcohol, drugs or non-prescribed medication
- Certain hazardous or high-risk activities/work
Mandatory Travel insurance for travelers visiting Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar
Arriving in Mainland Tanzania first: Applicable visitors should obtain NIC Inbound Travel Insurance. If travelling onward to Zanzibar, a separate ZIC insurance policy is not required. Keep a copy of the NIC insurance certificate available for verification.
Arriving in Zanzibar first: Guests who already have valid ZIC Inbound Travel Insurance do not need to purchase NIC Mainland Tanzania insurance again. Keep a copy of the ZIC insurance certificate available for verification.
Existing Travel Insurance
This mandatory inbound insurance is separate from any existing comprehensive travel insurance you may have and is not included in the tour price.
